Whirlpool Has Online Consumer Tool for 'Cash for Appliances'

Benton Harbor-based Whirlpool Corp. said Monday that it had launched an easy-to-use rebate finder tool on three of its brand Web sites -- Whirlpool, Maytag and KitchenAid.
As a manufacturer and marketer of more than 300 Energy Star-qualified major appliances in the United States and Canada, Whirlpool created the tool to help consumers navigate and make the most of the "Cash for Appliances" rebate program.

By entering a local zip code and appliance type, the online tool instantly informs the consumer of the amount of applicable state rebates through the federal program. While rebate terms and eligible products vary greatly, many states offer generous rebates for qualified washers, dishwashers and refrigerators. Additionally, the rebate finder will provide information on rebates from a consumer's local utility company if available.

"Cash for Appliances" is part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, a Department of Energy program providing nearly $300 million to fund state-run rebate programs for consumer purchases of new Energy Star-qualified appliances.

"The 'Cash for Appliances' program is a great incentive for consumers to purchase new, energy-efficient appliances and retire their energy draining older appliances," said Warwick Stirling, Whirlpool global director of energy and sustainability. "The rebate on the purchase of a new Energy Star-qualified appliance is just the beginning of the savings. Ultimately, it's an investment that will provide monthly savings on utility bills and benefit the environment through reduced energy and water use."

Whirlpool brand leads the industry with the Resource Saver refrigerator, the most energy efficient side-by-side ever. It exceeds federal energy standards by 30 percent and consumes less energy annually than a 60-watt light bulb under continuous operation. According to the Energy Star program, by replacing any refrigerator made before 1993 with a new Energy Star-qualified model, consumers can save up to $65 per year in operating costs.

Energy Star-qualified washers are leaders in energy and water savings. Replacing a traditional top-load washer made before 2000 with a new Energy Star model can save consumers up to $135 per year according to the DOE. Whirlpool Corporation offers both front- and top-load high-efficiency washers. The Whirlpool brand Duet front-load washer (model WFW9700V) uses 74 percent less water and 80 less energy saving up to $1,000 in lifetime water and energy costs. The Maytag Bravos top-load washer can save the consumer up to $900 in lifetime water and energy costs.

I gave up on fixing the dishwasher last night. Totally gave up.

Maintaining & Cleaning your Range Hood

If you have to do any kind of repair or maintenance on your range hood, make sure to unplug it from the power supply. Use a properly grounded outlet if your vent hood is not wired directly to your household power supply. It might be a good idea to cover the top of your range so that grease does not drop on it while you are making your adjustments (or something worse)

Wipe down the exterior and interior of your range hood often. (every week is a good idea)

To clean thoroughly, use hot water, soap, and a splash of ammonia to cut the grease buildup.

You can also purchase very good cleaners and degreaser at reputable online Appliance Part stores.

Clean the metal mesh filters often. (every month is a good idea) These can retain grease and be a fire hazard. Use a degreaser and hot water to rinse it. The range hood filter can be cycled through a dishwasher as well.

Wipe the fan blades regularly.

Check the vent and ducts periodically for grease buildup.

This year, you got paid for tossing out the clunker car. Next year, you'll be rewarded for getting rid of the energy-inefficient appliance. Many states will be sponsoring a "Cash for Appliances" program, similar to "Cash for Clunkers" in that you'll be paid for doing a big dump (or recycle) of your old appliances and buying those labeled with the Energy Star seal.

This is part of the federal government's economic stimulus plan -- it set aside $300 million in rebates for buying energy-efficient products, and state governments had to send detailed plans to Washington by to explain how they would give that money away.

So unlike Cash for Clunkers, each state is in charge of its own Cash for Appliances program.

All appliances that qualify for the cash for appliances program must feature the energy star label. Without this label, they can’t qualify for any rebate funded by the government. This certification indicates the appliance will help the owner conserve energy every month and therefore save money on their utilities.

One downside: Unlike cars, there's no lot you can wheel your clunker appliance to. New York is one state that's giving an incentive for recycling appliances by adding extra to your rebate amount if you show proof you recycled the freezer of fridge. But residents have the extra burden of finding out what they need to do with their old appliance before they can cash in on the new one.

Act fast, when it starts in your state! That $300 million the Federal Government set aside goes fast when divided among all states and territories. California only gets $35.2 million for its massive population, so it definitely pays to be first in line at the appliance store.

Maintaining your Dishwasher Dishracks
The plastic coating on your dish rack may wear off resulting in corrosion and rust. You can cap the damaged rack tines with slip-on rubber tips and touch up any metal showing with a liquid rubber type material. For best results, remove any rust present on the racks with sandpaper or a sanding block before applying the repair material.

Cleaning the Spray Arm Holes of your Dishwasher
Over time, the small holes in the spray arm(s) of your dishwasher may become clogged with toothpicks, glass, paper, hard water scale, etc. Your dishwasher will perform better if you clean out the small holes from time to time.

It is a good idea to clean out any hard water and/or soap deposits in the wash system, tank, and pump system. To do this, run hot water at the tap. Put the empty dishwasher into the regular wash cycle. Wait until the machine has filled with water and begins to circulate the water. At this time, add your cleaning product (white vinegar or Glisten) directly into the bottom of the dishwasher.

Allow the machine to run the entire wash cycle. For best results, reset or advance the dishwasher to run again in the wash cycle without draining the treated water. We recommend performing this maintenance once or twice a year.

Dishwasher Filter
On many dishwashers, there is a filter near the bottom or under the lower spray arm that needs to be cleaned on a regular basis. Consult your owner's manual to find out how to remove and clean it. If the filter has holes in it, replace it to protect the pump and motor seals from particles that may be in the dishwasher.

Don't Let that Nasty Ice Cube Get the Best of you!

We had an IceMaker problem the last couple of weeks and didn't understand just how difficult it is to live without an icemaker in a family of six! After thawing out the freezer (what a mess) and starting things up, we realized that the culprit was actually an ice cube stuck in the icemaker that was jamming things up.

Before jumping through hoops and buying lots of icemaker parts, make sure that you do the simplest money saving thing and defrost .. You never know how you can "Extend the Life of the Appliance".

If you do find that the problem is not a simple jammed ice cube - check the icemaker motor assembly - you can purchase a new one below.

Another great tip is to make sure that the Icemaker Heater is working properly. The heater is under the ice cube mold. It is visible as a metal tube that runs the length of the ice mold on some models and looks alot like the heating element on some electric ovens. It does not always feel hot to the touch when operating in the freezer, it only raises the temperature slightly above freezing so the ice cubes come loose.

Replacing a Door Gasket on your Oven

If the oven won't heat to the proper temperature or heats the food unevenly, the problem could be a bad oven door gasket. The easiest test to determine if your oven needs a new door gasket is to slowly wave your hand around the door, being careful not to touch it, while the oven is turned on. If you can feel heat on your hand, the gasket probably needs replacement.

Replace it with a new gasket made for the brand of range that you own. It is easy to find the correct gasket by using our handy search on top or clicking here.

On most brand ovens, the door gasket is located on the frame of the oven, and the door closes against it. This door gasket is generally friction-fit in a channel and can be replaced even by a novice. In other oven units, the oven door has two sections, and the gasket is not mounted on the door frame, but is installed between the front and back sections of the oven door.

Don't try to replace this type of gasket without the help or advice of a professional service repairman.

Pull the old oven door gasket out of the channel. On some oven door frames the gasket is held in place with screws. To get at the screws, bend back the exposed edge of the gasket.
Clean the channel and the door frame with a solution of mild household detergent and water.
To install the new gasket, start the replacement at the top of the door frame and work down the sides, easing the gasket around corners. Finish the installation along the bottom, butting the ends of the gasket firmly together.

TIPS FOR SAFETY

If you smell gas, leave the house immediately.
Do not try to turn off the gas from inside the house, or turn any lights on or off.
Find and turn off the master gas valve outside the house.
Go to a telephone and call the gas company or the fire department immediately to report a leak.
Do not re-enter your home.

This particular press release caught our eye because of one statement - 75% of Americans now recognize the phrase Energy Star. This is a far cry from a few years ago and really highlights the awareness that not only the major appliance companies have worked to achieve - but also the media and small little blogs like this one!

The more we cumulatively talk about ways that we can save money while helping conserve energy, the more people will pass along the word. This has been proven time and time again. As a matter of fact, it is the American public that pushes major companies to rethink the way they manufacturer, market and build products.

Help! My Dishwasher is Taking Forever!

Everything seems to be going well - when all of a sudden, it seems that your dishwasher is taking forever to wash the disshes. If your dishwasher's cycle times are too long - there are three things to look at:

Water pre-heating
Your dishwasher may be the type of dishwasher that pre-heats the water. If so, and if the water entering the dishwasher is cool or icy-cold, the heater may take up to half an hour to heat the water.

To avoid the wait time on these types of dishwashers, increase the incoming water temperature before turning on the dishwasher. Do that by running the kitchen sink faucet until the water runs hot. Or increase the temperature of the hot water at the hot water heater. (this will increase the temperature throughout the house)

Warning! To lessen the risk of scalding, don't set the hot water heater temperature higher than 120 degrees Fahrenheit.

Check the Dishwasher Timer
Dishwasher timers don't often fail. But if every other part of the dishwasher seems to be working properly and the timer knob seems to be stuck in one place--doing one function continuously--the dishwasher timer may be at fault. Dishwasher timers can't be repaired. If yours is defective, replace it.

Water-heating cycle
Many dishwashers heat the wash and/or rinse water to a higher temperature, as the cycle calls for it. In these cycles, the dishwasher pauses after it has filled with water, waiting for the water to reach the pre-set temperature. What happens next, depends, as follows:

On some units, the pause is timed and the unit continues after the allotted time.

On others, the cycle can't continue until the water reaches the higher temperature.

If you have this type of dishwasher and the water isn't being heated (say, because of a problem with the heating element or thermostat), after the unit stops at the heating cycle, it never
continues. When you repair the heating-system problem, the "cycle problem" is fixed too.

Dishwashers Can Reduce Water Usage by More Than 80 Percent

The United States could save as much as 245 billion gallons of fresh water annually if everyone used a dishwasher instead of doing the dishes by hand. That's enough to provide drinking and cooking water for every household in America each year.

These facts are some of the findings in the Electrolux WaterSavings Web site (www.electrolux.com/watersavings_us) presented by Electrolux - a global leader in home appliances.

The Web site is based on findings by the U.S. Department of Energy's ENERGY STAR program, as well as consumer research by Electrolux, which have determined that it takes less than five gallons of water to do a load of dishes in an Electrolux ENERGY STAR qualified dishwasher, while handwashing an equivalent number of dishes requires 27 gallons of water.

This means a household in the United States could save 4,730 gallons annually by using a water-efficient dishwasher, such as the Electrolux.

If all households in the U.S. today that are doing dishes by hand switched to a modern dishwasher, a total of 245 billion gallons would be saved each year. The amount of water saved by one household making the switch would be enough to provide the drinking and cooking water for 2.5 other households.

By making the switch to a dishwasher, residents of the New York City metropolitan area could save 13,863,402,851 gallons each year, enough to fill more than 35,400 Olympic-size swimming pools. The people of the state of New York could conserve enough water annually to fill 67 stadiums the size of the Pasadena Rose Bowl. That's in addition to the estimated 229 hours each year saved by a household using a dishwasher instead of washing dishes by hand.

Even switching from a 10-year-old dishwasher to a new one would save the household nearly 30% of the water used.

"Water is becoming an increasingly scarce resource in many parts of the world, including the United States, and we all have a responsibility to use this precious resource more carefully," said Henrik Sundström, head of sustainability affairs at the Electrolux Group.

"Everyone can play a role in solving the challenge of water scarcity: consumers, by adopting new technologies and making smart choices in their daily life; policymakers, by encouraging consumers to do so, for instance with legislation and incentive programs that speed up the replacement of inefficient appliances; and industry, by reducing water use and emissions, and equally importantly, developing and offering products that are continuously more efficient and climate smart," Sundström concluded.

Today, 1.1 billion people in the world do not have access to adequate clean water to meet their basic daily needs, and 2.6 billion do not have proper sanitation facilities, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) within the UN. The UN warns that by the year 2025, between 2.6 and 3.1 billion people could be living in either water-scarce or water-stressed conditions. This already poses a serious threat to health and welfare, and also to agriculture and industry.

Canton appliance repair Web site extends charity program

On March 19, RepairClinic.com sponsored a corporate table to benefit Ypsilanti Meals on Wheels at the annual “Spring Fling” Benefit Dinner at the Marriott Eagle Crest Resort in Ypsilanti.

For the past 12 years, the nonprofit organization has held the dinner to raise money for their program which delivers meals to needy seniors and disabled individuals in the community.
Local celebrities, including faculty members from Eastern Michigan University along with community and government officials, posed as servers.

Patrons happily contributed generous tips in return for the excellent service provided at the hands of local VIP’s. The event was well-attended by many in the local area, including a group of Repairclinic.com employees, representing the recently established RepairClinic.com Outreach program.
