Most household garbage can be placed in a trash compactor safely, but the following items are exceptions: aerosol cans, anything explosive or flammable, oily rags, and anything poisonous. When crushing glass you should be aware that splinters may poke through the bag, and gloves should be worn when removing the bag.

The most
common problem with trash compactors is that people
don't know that they will not operate
until the trash bucket is in place and the door is
closed. There are two interlock switches that must be
activated before the compactor will operate:
Warning!
To avoid personal injury or even death, always
disconnect your trash compactor from its power source
before you do any troubleshooting or repair work on your
trash compactor.
A bucket
interlock switch in the wiring channel behind
the trash bucket, activated by contact with the top
ring on the bucket.
A door interlock switch under the touch latch
handle, activated when the door is closed.
